A disturbing case involving 16 children rescued from a rural Ohio home has taken another legal turn.

On September 9, a Vinton County judge found Gary Siders Sr., 73, mentally incompetent to stand trial after accepting a court-ordered evaluation that concluded his cognitive condition was not restorable. Siders faces 16 child-endangerment charges connected to the June 30 rescue.

The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, were discovered living in what authorities described as deplorable conditions inside a home in Hamden, Ohio. Investigators said many of the children had limited communication abilities and had not been enrolled in school. Some also required medical treatment after being removed from the home.

The case has continued to expand. Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders, the parents of the children, were also indicted on additional allegations involving sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in a separate investigation. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, the other adults connected to the home continue to face child-endangerment charges. The 16 children are now in county custody and receiving therapeutic care, with Ohio providing emergency funding to help support their long-term recovery.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the latest court ruling adds another major development to a case that has shocked Ohio and drawn national attention.
