“This Is Not Just About Xavier”: Mother of Boy in Coma After Baseball Accident Asks the World to Pray

For the first time, the mother of a 12-year-old boy struck in the neck by a baseball during warmups is speaking directly to the public after more than three months at his hospital bedside.

Xavier Taylor collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after the accident on May 26. He remains in a coma. His mother, Mai-Lin DosReis-Taylor, recorded a personal message from the hospital. Her plea, she said, is now larger than one child.

“This is not just about Xavier.”

Strangers have worn his No. 6, left baseball bats outside their homes, held vigils, and prayed for a boy they have never met. The family says they are amazed that his story has stayed in people’s hearts.

“We’re just amazed as a family what the Lord is doing with all of this and how He has kept Xavier still relevant,” Mai-Lin said. “We know that the Lord is doing something so much bigger than with Xavier.”

That is why she is asking people across the country and around the world to join a Night of Prayer & Praise on September 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. Eastern in Maple Shade, New Jersey. She says no one has to be in New Jersey to take part. Churches can gather. Families can pray at home. Others can join by Zoom or conference call. Anyone who believes in prayer can stop where they are and pray at the same time.

“We’re asking for the world to get involved,” she said. “We’re praying for revival. We’re praying for miracles and healings and deliverance to break out throughout the world.”

Xavier’s father, Gregory Taylor, described a more private grief: the loss of ordinary family life. The conversations. The arguments. The laughter.

“Mom and I miss our daily interactions, arguments, and flat out war,” he wrote. “You my son are the glue to our road. We miss you immensely. You provide us with laughter, craziness, and sheer joy.”

The prayer closest to the family remains the same: that God will wake Xavier, that his brain and body will heal, and that the boy who filled their home with noise and joy will fill it again.

Mai-Lin said the miracle they are praying for does not have to stop with their son. “The miracle that we believe we will be seeing for Xavier will not just be affecting him, it’ll be affecting so many other people because this world is hurting.”

More than three months ago, Xavier was a 12-year-old getting ready to play baseball. One pitch during warmups changed everything.
