Two Newborns Rescued After Being Abandoned in Eastern Guatemala

During Holy Week, the regional office of Guatemala’s Attorney General’s Office (PGN) in the east of the country launched emergency operations after members of the public reported two newborns left in total abandonment in the departments of Jalapa and Chiquimula.

In both cases, the National Civil Police, emergency responders, and medical staff moved quickly. Officials said the infants were reached before harsh weather could cause irreversible organ failure. They were taken to regional hospitals, where pediatric and neonatology teams began warming them in incubators, providing intravenous fluids, starting antimicrobial protection, and monitoring vital signs. Both babies were stabilized.

The rescues also opened legal protection cases. Judicial measures were requested so the infants could be placed in protective care while authorities determine their family situations or a possible declaration of adoptability.

Officials said the cases show how public reports, rapid police response, and immediate hospital care can save lives in the first hours after abandonment.
