Baby Melan and the Face That Would Not Stop Growing

Melan is a small girl from South Cotabato in the southern Philippines. After her first birthday a swelling began on the lower face. It did not stay small. By age three the mass had taken most of her jaw and cheek. She could not close her mouth. The left eye was crowded. Breathing and eating were work. She still sat in a pink toy jeep. The photographs are not AI. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho filmed her.
Biopsy in Davao pointed to ossifying fibroma — a benign but locally aggressive fibro-osseous tumor of the jaws. Doctors also used the word cherubism as the mass expanded into a grade that looks like that rare condition. Juvenile active (trabecular) ossifying fibroma and ameloblastoma were the other names floated in appeals. None of these is ordinary cancer. All of them can destroy a child’s face if they keep expanding. Surgery is resection, often more than once, then reconstruction. Recurrence is common if the first cut is shy.
Early advice was to wait years. Size and aggressiveness later made “wait” look dangerous, yet immediate cutting on a tiny, underweight child can make the tumor surge. Teams said: first get her to 18–20 kilograms. By mid-2026 the family reported that Makati Medical Center Foundation had accepted the case for multidisciplinary planning. Fundraising continued for Metro Manila reconstructive surgery.
The pattern is familiar in places where maxillofacial surgery is scarce: a painless lump at one, a face that swallows itself by three, a family selling what it has, a television segment, a bank account, a hospital that will not operate until the child can survive the table. Melan’s tumor is real. The delay is also real. Whether the next operation restores a mouth she can close depends on weight, on how much bone must go, and on who pays for the plates that replace it.
