JUST SIX MONTHS OLD, KYRA FACES A COMPLEX SURGERY TO PROTECT HER VISION

At just six months old, little Kyra is facing an extraordinary medical challenge.

Born nine weeks prematurely, Kyra was diagnosed with a frontal encephalocele, a rare condition in which brain tissue extends through an opening in the skull near the nasal and forehead area. As she grows, the condition is putting her vision at risk.

Doctors in Connecticut faced the difficult task of planning a highly complex operation on Kyra’s tiny skull. To prepare, the medical team used advanced 3D printing technology to create detailed replicas of her skull, allowing surgeons to study different approaches before entering the operating room.

Because Kyra was so small, several versions of the model were created to help the team understand how the delicate bones of her face could be reconstructed as safely as possible.

For her parents, the procedure was understandably frightening. Kyra’s mother, Jamie, shared how difficult it was to imagine such an extensive operation being performed on such a young child.

The medical team spent hours preparing Kyra for anesthesia before a large surgical team began the lengthy procedure. Surgeons carefully worked to repair the affected area and reconstruct part of her nasal region, while also facing concerns about how well the delicate bone graft would heal.
