SAYLOR HAYES CASE: NEW COURT RECORDS REVEAL EARLIER CHILD-WELFARE CASES INVOLVING HER PARENTS

Virginia / South Carolina — September 2026 Newly released court records are providing additional information about the legal history of Saylor Hayes’ parents as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the five-year-old girl’s death in South Carolina. Saylor, a nonverbal five-year-old girl, disappeared on August 30 while her family was staying at a vacation rental near Pawleys Island. Her body was recovered from a nearby waterway the following day.

Her parents, John Herb Hayes III and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, were later arrested and face charges related to allegations that they unlawfully placed a child at risk and/or willfully abandoned a child. Investigators have also examined the circumstances surrounding Saylor’s Project Lifesaver tracking device, which authorities say was not with her when she disappeared. Previous Child-Welfare Cases Court records from Washington County, Virginia, show that both parents previously faced child-abuse allegations. In 2023, authorities investigated concerns involving the family, and the children were reportedly removed from the home and placed in foster care. John Hayes III and Geordyn Hayes were subsequently charged with felony child abuse and neglect. The charges did not ultimately result in convictions. Earlier in 2026, Geordyn Hayes was arrested in another case involving allegations concerning a male infant. She initially faced charges related to child endangerment and reckless disregard for human life. Court records indicate that the case later changed. A felony child-cruelty charge was dismissed on August 14, 2026, while another charge was amended on August 17 to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The case was resolved with a $546 fine, according to reports citing the court records.

That resolution came just 13 days before Saylor disappeared. Preliminary Autopsy Findings The Georgetown County Medical Examiner reported preliminary findings showing pulmonary edema, meaning fluid had accumulated in Saylor’s lungs. The finding is consistent with drowning. However, the official cause and manner of death had not yet been finalized, with additional testing still pending. Saylor’s parents have not been charged with murder in connection with her death. The criminal allegations against them remain matters for the courts to determine, and they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The newly released records add important context to the family’s history, but investigators have yet to establish publicly how the previous cases relate, if at all, to the circumstances surrounding Saylor’s death. The investigation remains ongoing, and no trial date has been announced.
