PART 3: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Bianca was waiting in Adrian’s penthouse when he arrived.
She wore a white silk dress and held a glass of wine.
“Darling, you look terrible.”
Adrian placed the photograph on the table.
“Who is this man?”
Bianca glanced down.
Her expression barely changed.
“Shouldn’t you be asking Elena?”
“I’m asking you.”
She smiled.
“Perhaps your perfect wife wasn’t as perfect as you thought.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Did you know about Lucia?”
For the first time, Bianca’s smile disappeared.
“Who’s Lucia?”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Adrian watched her carefully.
Bianca was talented at many things.
But she had never learned to control her eyes.
They moved toward the photograph.
Not the man.
Elena.
“You knew someone was following my wife,” Adrian said.
Bianca placed her glass down.
“You’re becoming paranoid.”
“Then explain how you knew I went to the hospital.”
Silence.
“Who told you?”
She folded her arms.
“Your security team reports to you, Adrian. Not me.”
He immediately understood.
Someone inside his organization had been feeding Bianca information.
And whoever it was knew about Elena’s pregnancy.
He turned toward the door.
“Get out.”
Bianca laughed.
“You’re throwing me away because Elena suddenly decided to have a baby?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m asking you to leave because I finally understand the difference between being needed and being useful.”
Her face hardened.
“You have no idea what your wife has done.”
“Then tell me.”
Bianca stepped closer.
“Ask her about the Romano Foundation.”
Adrian stopped.
The foundation had been established by his mother.
It operated children’s hospitals, scholarships, and family assistance programs.
For years, Elena had quietly overseen its finances.
Adrian had signed the annual reports without reading them.
“What about it?”
Bianca smiled again.
“Your wife has been moving money.”
Adrian said nothing.
“Millions, Adrian. Into accounts you don’t control.”
He left without another word.
At two in the morning, Vincent arrived with the foundation’s financial records.
The transfers were real.
Over six million dollars had moved through a series of trusts during the previous year.
But the recipients weren’t strangers.
They were children.
Medical grants.
Guardianship funds.
Education accounts.
One account was registered under the initials L.B.
Lucia Bellini.
Another was linked to a children’s shelter in Milwaukee.
And the largest transfer had been approved by Adrian’s own late mother’s attorney.
“This wasn’t theft,” Vincent said.
“No.”
Adrian stared at the documents.
“It was protection.”
Then he noticed a name repeated across several files.
Thomas Vale.
The man in the courthouse photograph.
Vincent opened his laptop.
“Vale is a former federal financial investigator. He now specializes in protecting witnesses and recovering stolen charitable assets.”
“Why was Elena meeting him?”
“Because she found something.”
Vincent displayed a scanned document.
It was a trust amendment signed twelve years earlier.
According to the amendment, the Romano Foundation’s original charitable assets were supposed to remain permanently outside the family’s private business holdings.
Yet after Adrian’s father’s death, someone had altered the records.
Millions intended for children’s medical care had been redirected into private investment companies.
Companies now controlled by Bianca’s uncle.
Carlo DeLuca.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“My father was stealing from the foundation?”
“Your father started it. Carlo continued it.”
“And Elena discovered everything.”
Vincent nodded.
“She was preparing to restore the funds and turn over the records.”
Adrian felt sick.
Elena hadn’t simply been preparing to leave him.
She had been dismantling a financial scheme that powerful people wanted buried.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice whispered, “Adrian?”
“Elena?”
“Don’t come looking for me.”
“Where are you?”
“Listen carefully. Vincent cannot be trusted.”
Adrian turned slowly.
Vincent stood across the desk.
Elena continued.
“The photograph of Thomas and me was taken the day we submitted the evidence. Someone has been following us ever since.”
“Who?”
She began to answer.
Then a door slammed in the background.
“Elena?”
A sharp gasp.
The sound of footsteps.
And finally a man’s voice.
“Mrs. Romano, you should have stayed out of this.”
The line went dead.
Adrian looked up.
Vincent was already reaching for his phone.
“Boss, let me call our people.”
Adrian caught his wrist.
“Elena just told me not to trust you.”
Vincent froze.
Then, slowly, he lowered his phone.
“She’s right.”
Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.
Vincent looked toward the window.
“I’ve been working with Carlo DeLuca.”
For one terrible second, Adrian thought his oldest friend had betrayed him.
Then Vincent added:
“But not for the reason you think.”
He reached into his jacket and removed a sealed envelope.
“Your wife asked me to give you this if she disappeared.”
Inside was a letter written in Elena’s handwriting.
Adrian unfolded it.
The first sentence made his hands tremble.
ADRIAN, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEN BIANCA HAS ALREADY DISCOVERED THAT THE CHILD I’M CARRYING IS NOT THE ONLY BABY I HAVE BEEN PROTECTING.
