My Son Changed the Locks While I Was at My Husband’s Funeral—Then the Sheriff Arrived

PART 1 — LOCKED OUT OF MY OWN HOME

I buried my husband at eleven in the morning.

By two that afternoon, my son had changed the locks on our house.

I stood on the porch in my black funeral dress, holding the key that no longer worked.

“Michael?” I called.

My son opened the door just a few inches.

“Mom, we’ve decided you should move into assisted living.”

I stared at him.

“We? This is my home!”

His wife stepped forward.

“Actually, Michael’s taking over the family property. Your things are already packed.”

Behind them, I saw cardboard boxes containing 40 years of memories.

My wedding photographs. My husband’s favorite books. Even the blanket I’d made for our first baby.

“Your father hasn’t even been buried for four hours,” I whispered.

Michael looked away.

Then a patrol vehicle turned into the driveway.

A county sheriff stepped out, followed by a man carrying a leather briefcase.

“Mrs. Bennett?” the man asked. “I’m your husband’s estate attorney.”

He looked at Michael.

“Before anyone removes another item from this property, there’s something you need to understand.”

Then he opened the briefcase.
