Police Officer Killed, Another Injured in Montreal Grocery Store Shooting
Montreal, Canada – A tragic shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on Monday left one police officer dead, another injured, a civilian killed, and the suspect fatally shot by police, prompting a major emergency response and a citywide shelter-in-place advisory.
According to Montreal police, the incident unfolded around 11:35 a.m. near a supermarket and commercial-residential complex in the area. Officers responded to reports of an active shooter. Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, a five-year veteran of the force who joined in 2021, was killed in the line of duty. It was the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer died in the line of duty.
A second officer, a female colleague, was seriously wounded but is in stable condition. A 68-year-old civilian, identified as Michael Moshe Mizrahi, a member of the local Jewish community, was also killed.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Seth Hatfield from Alberta, was shot and killed by police shortly after the exchange of gunfire. Reports indicate he opened fire with a long gun, possibly from the Hilton Garden Inn on Boulevard Décarie, across from the Aylo (Pornhub parent) headquarters, before clashing with responding officers near the grocery store.
Video footage from the scene showed officers gathering outside the supermarket, breaking in a door, and ordering people inside to take cover on the floor. Witnesses described hearing numerous shots and scenes of chaos as police secured the area.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher described the event as a “nightmare” and confirmed a large-scale investigation is underway. Terrorism has been ruled out, though authorities are examining a manifesto reportedly left by the suspect expressing grievances against capitalism, feminism, Zionism, and the pornography industry.
The Côte-des-Neiges area, home to a significant Jewish community with kosher shops and restaurants, was placed on lockdown for several hours while officers searched for any additional threats. Residents were urged to shelter in place before the all-clear was given.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the community and the broader city. Tributes to the fallen officer and calls for support for law enforcement have begun circulating online and among local leaders.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events, the suspect’s motives, and any potential warning signs. No further suspects are being sought at this time.
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, the injured officer, and the entire Montreal police community during this difficult time.
