11-Year-Old Boy Drives Pickup Truck into Buddhist Pilgrimage Group in Thailand, Killing 8 Monks

Thailand – An 11-year-old boy driving his parents’ pickup truck crashed into a group of Buddhist monks on a pilgrimage walk, killing at least 8 monks and injuring many others.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 2, 2026, in Mukdahan Province, northeastern Thailand. The pilgrimage group, consisting of approximately 34–35 monks and several laypeople, was walking along the roadside when a pickup truck sped toward them and slammed directly into the procession.
According to survivor accounts and witnesses, some monks at the front of the line were unaffected, but those further back were struck with great force and thrown onto the road. At least five monks died at the scene, while others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. Many more were seriously injured, with some remaining in critical condition.

Police confirmed that the driver was an 11-year-old boy who had taken his parents’ pickup truck without permission, lost control of the vehicle, and caused the crash. The boy is currently in custody and will be questioned in the presence of child protection officers.
General Pairoj Thaiphutsa, Mukdahan Provincial Police Commander, stated that the vehicle has been sent for technical inspection. The boy’s family will be required to cooperate in determining legal responsibility.
Mukdahan Governor Worayan Bunnarat (also referred to as Vorayan Boonarat) described the incident as a “wake-up call” for road safety. He urged parents to exercise greater supervision over their children, especially to prevent minors from accessing and operating vehicles.
Buddhist monks are deeply revered in Thailand and play a vital role in preserving and spreading the teachings of the Buddha.
