Ohio Police Sergeant Fatally Shot Responding to 911 Call About Gunshots; Suspect and Two Others Dead

A 10-year veteran police sergeant was killed Sunday night while responding to a 911 call reporting a break-in and gunshots at a home in Rittman, Ohio, authorities said. The suspect and two other people also died in the incident.

Sgt. Scott Ries of the Rittman Police Department was fatally shot after officers arrived at the scene and immediately came under fire, according to a joint statement from Rittman Police Chief Robert Shows and sheriffs from Wayne and Medina counties.

Four other officers — three from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office and one from the Hinckley Police Department — were injured, along with a police dog. Two officers were hospitalized in stable condition, while the others were treated at the scene. The dog was reported in serious condition.

The identities of the suspect and the two other victims were not immediately released. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives noted that the suspect’s former partner and her child were among the deceased.

Ries, 54, previously served as a deputy sheriff in Wayne County and as an officer in Sugar Grove before joining the Rittman department. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags flown at half-staff in Wayne County, the Statehouse, and other buildings in his honor until sunset on the day of his funeral.

The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio expressed condolences, urging residents to keep Ries’ family, friends, and colleagues in their prayers. The incident remains under investigation.
