Alberta Father Undergoes 30-Hour Tattoo to Match Son’s Birthmark and Boost His Confidence

STONY PLAIN, Alberta — Derek Prue Sr. went to remarkable lengths to support his young son after noticing the boy’s growing self-consciousness about a large birthmark on his chest. The father sat through nearly 30 hours of tattoo sessions to get an exact replica of the mark inked on his own body.

Derek Jr., then 8 years old, had begun refusing to remove his shirt at the pool or during swimming, embarrassed by the prominent congenital birthmark that covers a significant portion of his torso. His father saw his once-confident son withdrawing and knew he needed to act.

Secretly, Derek Sr. had the birthmark photographed and brought the image to tattoo artist Tony Gibbert. He requested a precise match in size, shape, color, and texture. The process, which spanned several weeks and roughly 30 hours in the chair, was far more painful and time-consuming than expected.

The heartfelt reveal came during a family pool day. When Derek Jr. saw his father’s matching “birthmark,” he was stunned and filled with joy. The gesture instantly lifted the boy’s spirits, giving him the confidence to go shirtless alongside his dad.

Their story, which spread widely online, has inspired countless parents and families. Derek Sr. said the tattoo was a simple way to show his son he would never have to feel “different” or alone. The matching marks stand as a beautiful symbol of unconditional parental love and solidarity.
