Four-month-old Miguel Arthur Gomes da Silva entered the world with a rare congenital limb difference that left him without arms and legs. Despite the unexpected diagnosis, his family describes him as an otherwise healthy baby with normal cognitive development.

His mother, Rivânia Gomes da Silva, then 20 years old, had no idea about his condition before he was born. Doctors only confirmed the congenital malformation after delivery. Some accounts of the case have attributed the limb differences to amniotic band syndrome, a rare condition in which fibrous strands from the amniotic sac can constrict and disrupt the development of limbs in the womb.

Rivânia lives with her aunt, Simone Gomes, who is also raising two children of her own in the Jangurussu neighborhood of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. She has had no contact with Miguel’s father since the eighth month of her pregnancy. The father chose not to register the child after learning of the condition, so Miguel was registered solely under his mother’s name.

Rivânia left her job during pregnancy and has remained at home to care for her son full-time. In the early days after birth, she found it difficult to hold him safely because of his physical differences, but the family has since adapted. “I only found out about Miguel’s condition when he was born. The first few days were very difficult because I didn’t know how to hold him,” she has said. Doctors advised the family to raise him like any other child, noting that while he has physical limitations, he is healthy and developing normally cognitively. At the time the story first drew attention, Miguel was on a waiting list for physical therapy in Fortaleza.

The family’s story first went viral in September 2015 after photos of Miguel were shared on social media as part of a fundraising effort. Supporters across Brazil donated diapers, formula, and hygiene products to help meet the baby’s basic needs while Rivânia could not work. Public defenders also assisted the family in accessing available social benefits and medical support.

Miguel’s cheerful expression and resilient spirit in the widely shared photographs touched many people. His family continues to emphasize that, beyond the visible differences, he is a bright and healthy little boy whose future they are determined to support with love and practical care.
