A 9-year-old boy is making progress in a long and difficult recovery after being attacked by several dogs on a beach in Bimini, his mother said this week.

Beau was staying with family and friends at a home in Bimini Cove when the attack occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. on July 28. According to his mother, Aliette Trelles, the boy had gone outside to collect sand for hermit crabs the family had caught the night before. He was suddenly set upon by several large dogs but managed to run back inside.

“All he kept repeating was ‘dogs, dogs, dogs, dogs,’” Trelles said. “He was speaking like he was going to die, speaking to God and saying, ‘I don’t wanna die this way.’ And me looking at him, holding him, inspecting all these wounds, going, ‘Is this the moment I lose my son?’”

Extent of the Injuries
The attack left Beau with severe injuries to his limbs, face and neck. A portion of his scalp was removed, and the top of his head has required specialized sealed dressings to aid healing.

“His entire crown of his head was removed,” Trelles said.

The U.S. Coast Guard airlifted Beau to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in Miami-Dade County. His father, Michael Brattain, said the boy remained awake throughout the flight. “He was awake the entire time. My goal was to keep him awake. ‘Beau, look at me, keep your eyes open.’”

Beau has already undergone three surgeries. His family expects additional procedures and extensive therapy. Trelles estimated the total cost of care could reach $2 million to $4 million depending on reconstruction and long-term needs. Friends and relatives are raising funds to help cover the expenses.

Family’s Message
Trelles described her son as strong and resilient. “He’s doing well. He’s strong. He’s a fighter. He’s blowing people away with his ability to recover.”

At the same time, she said the attack has changed how she views the island. “An island that held so much joy and memory for me is a place I don’t want to go to again. I don’t want anyone to go back to it again until they get their stuff together.”

Local reports have indicated prior concerns about stray dogs in the area. The owner of the dogs involved is reportedly cooperating with authorities. Both of Beau’s parents have retained legal counsel as the investigation by the Royal Bahamas Police Force continues.

The family continues to focus on Beau’s recovery while calling for stronger measures to prevent similar attacks.
