A Long-Awaited Beginning, and a Journey of Hope

After three years of hoping, waiting, and trying to start a family, Marci Shelman and Tristan Dederscheck finally received the news they had longed for. They were going to have a son. The joy they felt was profound—years of patience and quiet determination had brought them to this moment. They named him Riot.

The pregnancy, however, brought unexpected challenges. Doctors identified several medical concerns that raised questions and required careful monitoring. When the time came, Riot arrived nearly seven weeks early. Shortly after birth, he was diagnosed with neonatal Marfan syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition that can affect the heart, lungs, and connective tissue. The diagnosis was serious, and the road ahead was uncertain.

Riot spent 91 days in the neonatal intensive care unit. Day after day, a dedicated medical team provided the specialized care he needed while his parents stayed close, learning, hoping, and counting the small signs of progress. Those long weeks in the hospital tested their strength, yet they held onto the belief that their son would one day come home.

That day finally arrived. After nearly three months in the NICU, Riot was stable enough to leave the hospital and begin life with his family in their own home. The relief and gratitude were immense. For a brief, precious window of time, they were together under one roof—just as they had imagined for so long.

Then, only two days after coming home, Riot’s condition suddenly worsened. He was rushed back to the hospital for urgent medical care. The sudden turn of events was heartbreaking and frightening, another reminder of how fragile the journey could be.

Today, Marci, Tristan, and their family continue to face each challenge with determination and hope. Riot remains under ongoing medical treatment and specialized support. His parents take each day as it comes, celebrating small victories, advocating for their son, and holding tightly to the love that brought them this far.

Riot’s story is still unfolding. For Marci and Tristan, the long wait to become parents has become a different kind of journey—one defined by resilience, deep love, and the quiet courage to keep hoping, one day at a time.
