BREAKING: Blue Alert Issued as Search Intensifies for Suspect in Tucson Police Recruit Case

A statewide Blue Alert was issued in Arizona late Thursday night as authorities searched for a man accused in the fatal shooting of a Tucson police recruit, bringing renewed urgency to an investigation that has left a local community deeply shaken.

Authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old Alex James Barnett. According to investigators, a first-degree murder warrant has been issued for Barnett, who is considered armed and dangerous. Police are urging members of the public not to approach him if they see him.

The case began Wednesday morning when 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez and his fiancée were found with gunshot wounds at a home in the Valencia West area west of Tucson. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene, while his fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.

Ramirez had previously worked as a corrections officer with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department before becoming a recruit with the Tucson Police Department. His connection to law enforcement made the investigation particularly significant for agencies across southern Arizona.

Investigators say the case may involve more than one person. Authorities are also seeking information about two other men who were captured in surveillance footage and are believed to have possible connections to the incident. Their identities have not yet been publicly confirmed.

One piece of evidence came from surveillance footage recorded at a Shell gas station near Casino Del Sol. Investigators say Barnett and another unidentified man were seen there at approximately 5:20 a.m. on August 19. A second unidentified individual was later seen leaving a gray SUV in a parking lot where detectives eventually located the vehicle.

The discovery of the vehicle helped investigators develop additional leads and ultimately led authorities to release photographs and video images of people they believe may have information about the case.

The Blue Alert sent emergency notifications to cellphones across Arizona after 11 p.m. Thursday. The system is designed to help authorities quickly notify the public when a suspect believed to pose a serious threat is wanted in connection with an attack involving law enforcement.

Authorities provided a detailed description of Barnett, including his height, build, tattoos, clothing, and the motorcycle he was reportedly riding. Investigators have warned the public not to attempt to approach or confront him and instead to contact law enforcement immediately if they believe they have located him.

Barnett’s criminal history has also come under scrutiny. Arizona prison records cited by local media show previous convictions involving vehicle theft, abuse-related offenses, credit card fraud, unlawful imprisonment, and other charges dating back to 2010. Those prior cases, however, do not by themselves establish what happened in the current investigation.

For investigators, major questions remain unanswered. Authorities are still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, determine the roles of the people captured on surveillance footage, and understand what led to the events at the home.

The search remains active as detectives appeal to the public for information. Anyone who recognizes the unidentified individuals or has information about Barnett’s whereabouts is being urged to contact authorities rather than attempting to intervene personally.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on locating the wanted suspect, identifying the other individuals investigators are seeking, and establishing a complete account of what happened to Carlos Ramirez and his fiancée.
