MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND — Five young men have been identified after a devastating A66 collision that claimed seven lives, including two Cleveland Police officers, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17, were all pronounced dead at the scene after the Volkswagen Passat they were traveling in collided with a marked police vehicle near South Bank.

The crash also claimed the lives of PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who were inside the police vehicle traveling in the correct direction.

🚨 The Passat Was Traveling Against Traffic
The fatal collision happened at approximately 3:39 a.m. on August 22.

According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, officers had been pursuing the Passat after it was linked to reports of suspicious activity and was believed to be using cloned registration plates.

The pursuit lasted just under seven minutes.

When the Passat entered the A66 traveling against the flow of traffic, officers abandoned the pursuit and continued on the correct side of the carriageway.

Approximately 10 seconds later, the Passat collided with another police vehicle.

That vehicle was not involved in the original pursuit. It was in the area assisting officers searching for the Passat.

💔 Two Officers Were Also Killed
PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough were both serving with Cleveland Police.

Blades was a husband and father of two young boys.

His wife described him as her beloved husband, best friend and a devoted father whose loss had left the family devastated.

Tom Clough’s family remembered him as their hero and a man with a strong sense of duty and a fantastic sense of humor.

He had previously served his country before continuing his career in policing.

Their families have received widespread support from colleagues, friends and members of the public.

🔎 Police Had Been Searching for the Passat
The events leading to the crash began before the seven deaths.

Cleveland Police said officers had received several reports of two vehicles being driven dangerously in the Middlesbrough area.

One of those vehicles was believed to be a Volvo XC60, which police said had been seen ramming properties.

The second vehicle was the Volkswagen Passat involved in the fatal collision.

Police said both vehicles were operating with cloned registration plates but were detected by automated number-plate recognition systems.

The Volvo has since been recovered.

⚠️ Wider Criminal Investigation Underway
The crash has now triggered a much broader criminal investigation.

Cleveland Police said there were significant links to suspected serious and organized criminal activity surrounding events before the collision.

Four of the five people inside the Passat were reported to have previous criminal convictions.

🚔 Seventeen People Have Now Been Arrested

Cleveland Police initially announced 12 arrests, involving nine men and three women aged between 19 and 61.

The suspected offenses included participation in an organized crime group, firearms offenses and possession of Class A and Class B drugs with intent to supply.

Five more people were subsequently arrested on Tuesday, bringing the total number of arrests to 17.

Among those latest arrests were a 16-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man suspected of participating in an organized crime group.

A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, while a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill.

All five remained in custody as the investigation continued.

The tragedy has also intensified concerns over dangerous driving being recorded and shared online.

Police have examined whether activities surrounding the vehicles may have been filmed.

However, Cleveland Police has said there is currently no evidence that the events were filmed specifically for TikTok.

The issue has nevertheless triggered wider debate about social-media content that appears to glorify reckless driving and potentially encourage people to take greater risks on public roads.

Flowers and tributes have been placed for the two police officers and the five young men.
