NOGALES, MEXICO — The search for missing Arizona grandmother Nancy Guthrie has taken investigators and volunteer searchers across the U.S.-Mexico border after an anonymous tip claimed her remains could be buried near Nogales, Mexico.

Guthrie, 84, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home on February 1, 2026. Authorities believe she was taken against her will, but she has not been found and no suspect has been publicly identified.

🔎 Anonymous Tip Sends Volunteers Into Mexico
The latest lead came through Buscando Corazones Nogales, a volunteer organization that searches for missing people in Mexico.

According to the group, an anonymous caller claimed Guthrie had been buried in an unmarked grave near a stream in the Mariposa area, west of Nogales and close to the Arizona border.

The group conducted an initial search on May 16 with as many as 15 volunteers.

Nothing connected to Guthrie was found.

The caller later contacted the group again and provided additional directions, prompting another search in the area on June 10. That search also failed to locate Guthrie.

🚨 Authorities Have Not Confirmed the Tip
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has acknowledged the existence of the anonymous tip but stressed that it has not been verified.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said his department was aware of reports concerning information provided to the Mexican volunteer group.

However, he said Mexican authorities had not contacted the sheriff’s department about the search.

Authorities have reiterated that the investigation remains active and that detectives will continue following credible information.

That means the Mexico search should not be interpreted as confirmation that Nancy is there.

There is currently no publicly confirmed evidence that Guthrie was taken into Mexico.

🏜️ The Search Area Has Previously Yielded Human Remains
The location identified by the anonymous caller has attracted attention because volunteer search groups have previously discovered human remains and clandestine graves in the broader area.

Reports indicate that more than 25 unmarked graves were found in the region during earlier searches.

However, none of those discoveries has been publicly linked to Nancy Guthrie.

The difficult desert terrain makes the searches particularly challenging, with streams, washes, rocks and large areas of undeveloped land surrounding the border region.

🏠 Nancy Disappeared From Her Tucson Home
Nancy was last seen at her home near Tucson on January 31, before her family reported her missing the following day.

Authorities have said evidence found at the residence supports the belief that she was taken against her will.

Investigators have also examined surveillance footage and other evidence collected during the investigation.

Despite thousands of investigative hours and a huge number of tips, Nancy has not been located.

👮 Sheriff’s Department Continues Its Investigation
While volunteers in Mexico have pursued the anonymous lead independently, the main investigation remains with U.S. authorities.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has repeatedly encouraged people with legitimate information to contact law enforcement rather than conduct unauthorized searches.

The department says investigators will assess credible information and determine whether it warrants further action.

The FBI is also involved in the investigation.

Nancy’s family has offered a $1 million reward for information that leads to her recovery.

The reward reflects the family’s continuing effort to generate new leads after months without a confirmed breakthrough.

Savannah Guthrie has repeatedly appealed publicly for anyone with information to come forward.
