‘Doctors Cannot Cut It Out’: 4-Year-Old Ahmad Fights Inoperable Brain Cancer as His Family Asks for Prayer

Ahmad is only 4 years old. For more than a year, he has been fighting Stage 4 brain cancer that doctors say they cannot safely remove.

His grandmother, Val, reached out because she wants people to know her grandson’s name — and to surround him with prayer.

There were no obvious warning signs. Ahmad was 2½, just days from his third birthday, when everything changed. One evening he was playing in the grass with his little brother. He fell. Then he could not get back up. He could no longer walk on his own.

The family rushed him to an emergency room. Val was not satisfied with the first explanation. She called his doctor and kept pushing. An MRI finally gave them the answer: diffuse midline glioma, or DMG — an aggressive brain tumor.

Ahmad was sent to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. His family says the medical team there has cared for him for more than a year. But because of where the tumor sits, Val says surgery is not an option. Attempting to take it out, doctors have told them, could kill him.

That means this little boy and everyone who loves him have spent more than a year fighting a cancer they cannot simply cut away. Their hope rests in treatments and radiation while the tumor remains inside him.

The fight has taken over nearly every part of their lives. Val says most of Ahmad’s days are hard. He needs care around the clock and can barely make it to preschool even one day a week.

“As her mother and his grandmother, I’m doing everything possible to support them,” Val said.

She did not reach out because she expects strangers to fix what this family is facing. She reached out because she wants people praying for a 4-year-old whose family has watched him battle a tumor doctors cannot safely remove.
