103-Year-Old Man Reveals Secret to Long, Healthy Life Despite a Lifetime of Hardships

May 23, 2026 – At 103 years old, James Sneed from Shiloh, Alabama, continues to live with remarkable energy and good health. The World War II veteran has shared his simple yet powerful philosophy on how to live a long and fulfilling life.

Born into a difficult life, Sneed lost his mother at the age of nine and went to live with his grandmother before being raised by his stepmother, who treated him with genuine love and care. He lived through the Great Depression and many major historical events. At 18, just months after the Pearl Harbor attack, he joined the U.S. Army.

Sneed was deployed to North Africa, Italy, and finally Switzerland during World War II. After the war ended, he spent 361 difficult days at sea waiting for peace treaties to take effect. Reflecting on those frightening times, he recalled constant bombings and air raid sirens that made sleep nearly impossible.

His guiding principle in life is straightforward: “Never stop moving forward. Always try to turn good into better, and better into the best.”

After returning from the war, Sneed built a modest life, saving small amounts of money to eventually build a house. His wife, Minnie, was one of the first Black teachers involved in school desegregation efforts. The couple faced racial discrimination but remained strong together.

Sneed was actively involved in the local NAACP chapter during the Civil Rights Movement and was later inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for his contributions.

Even at an advanced age, he stays active by exercising three times a week with a senior community group. He emphasizes the importance of keeping busy and maintaining a calm mindset.

“I’ve faced many disappointments in life, of course,” Sneed said. “But I always keep myself occupied and stay peaceful, so nothing can truly bother me.”

His daughter describes him as the rock of the family, crediting his strong work ethic and selfless spirit for his enduring vitality.

In September 2026, James Sneed will celebrate his 104th birthday. His advice to others is simple and heartfelt: “Do good things for everyone you meet and everywhere you go.”
