Austrian Astrophotographer Captures Ultra-Rare Triple Celestial Arcs from 4,200m in the Alps

In one of the most breathtaking feats of astrophotography in recent years, Austrian photographer Angel Fux braved extreme conditions high in the Alps to capture a celestial phenomenon so rare that few have ever witnessed it — and ended up photographing something even more extraordinary.

Fux ascended the formidable Dent d’Hérens, a 4,200-meter peak straddling the border between Switzerland and Italy, enduring temperatures as low as -28°C (-18.4°F) and ferocious winds. Her goal was to document one of the year’s rare opportunities to photograph the double arc of the Milky Way — the simultaneous appearance of the winter and summer Milky Way arcs in the night sky.

But as she reviewed her images after the grueling shoot, Fux discovered something completely unexpected: a third luminous arc cutting across the heavens. It was the elusive Gegenschein — a faint, oval-shaped glow caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust particles opposite the Sun. The Gegenschein is notoriously difficult to observe and even harder to capture clearly in a single photograph, especially alongside the Milky Way.

What began as an ambitious attempt to record the rare double galactic arc had become an unprecedented triple-arc image — a celestial masterpiece featuring the winter Milky Way, summer Milky Way, and Gegenschein all visible together.

After approximately 40 hours of meticulous digital processing, the stunning photograph was selected by NASA for its prestigious Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) program, earning worldwide acclaim within the astronomical community.

The image stands not only as a technical triumph but also as a powerful reminder of the beauty and mystery that still remain in our night skies — if one is willing to climb high enough, endure the cold, and wait for the perfect moment.

Fux’s achievement has been celebrated as one of the most remarkable astrophotography images of the year, blending human perseverance with the wonders of the cosmos in a single, unforgettable frame.
