Swiss Man Shouts ‘Allahu Akbar’ During Knife Attack at Winterthur Train Station

Winterthur, Switzerland — A 31-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing three people at the main train station in Winterthur, with witnesses reporting he shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the assault.

The attack occurred on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the busy transportation hub near Zurich. According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Nesip Dedeler, a dual Swiss-Turkish citizen, approached victims and stabbed them with a knife, injuring three men aged 28, 43, and 52. One victim sustained serious injuries to the thigh and required emergency surgery, while the others were less severely wounded. All are expected to survive.

Zurich security official Mario Fehr described the incident as a “terrorist act”, citing the attacker’s use of the Islamic phrase and apparent signs of radicalization. Dedeler had previously come to the attention of authorities due to links with Islamist circles, including visits to a radical mosque.

The suspect has a documented history of mental health issues. Just days before the attack, on May 25, he had been taken to a psychiatric clinic after appearing incoherent at a police station. He reportedly left the facility shortly before carrying out the stabbing.

In a statement to the media, Dedeler’s father said his son “needs help,” emphasizing psychological problems over ideological motivations.

Security forces quickly detained the suspect at the scene. He was seen in video footage being restrained by officers while wearing a dark t-shirt and light-colored pants, with long dark hair and a full beard.

The incident has heightened concerns across Switzerland about public safety, integration challenges, and the intersection of mental illness and extremism. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full motive behind the attack.

This is the latest in a series of knife-related incidents in Europe that have fueled debates on immigration, radicalization, and mental health support systems.

Authorities have not released further details at this time, and the suspect remains in custody.
