PRESTON, UK — After seven weeks of harrowing testimony, emotional evidence, and disturbing allegations, the jury in the trial of Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley has retired to begin deliberations in the case surrounding the death of 13-month-old Preston Davey.

Jamie Varley, 37, a former teacher, denies murdering Preston, along with multiple counts of child cruelty, sexual offences, and other serious charges. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, denies causing or allowing the death of the child, child cruelty, and sexual assault. Both men have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The Case

Preston Davey was placed with the couple in April 2023 at around nine months old as they were in the process of adopting him. Prosecutors allege that over the following months, he suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse before his death on July 27, 2023.

The court heard that Preston was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination reportedly revealed around 40 injuries. The prosecution claims Varley was responsible for the fatal act following a pattern of abuse, while the defense maintains the evidence does not prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

Varley told investigators he had left Preston in the bath briefly and found him unconscious, but this account has been challenged. Bodycam footage shown in court captured Varley in distress at the hospital.
