Outrage in Boston: 14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Armed Robbery of Children’s Lemonade Stand

A shocking crime in South Boston has drawn widespread condemnation after a 14-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly robbing two young siblings at gunpoint while they ran a lemonade stand.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on West Ninth Street, where 12-year-old David Byrne and his 11-year-old sister Juliette had set up their stand hoping to earn some extra money before summer break. What should have been an innocent childhood activity turned into a terrifying ordeal.

A Brazen Holdup
Two juvenile suspects approached the stand multiple times before one displayed a black firearm tucked into his waistband. When the children didn’t immediately respond to a question about Apple Pay, the second suspect grabbed the cash box containing about $50. David later recounted the moment to CBS News: “He walked over here, he said, ‘I might need to take the box,’ and he grabbed it with one hand, and then he showed us the gun.”

Juliette put her hands up, while David told the robbers they could take it. The suspects fled the scene, leaving the siblings traumatized but unharmed.
Swift Arrest and Ongoing Search
Boston Police Department acted quickly. On Friday, just two days after the robbery, officers arrested the 14-year-old suspect. He faces charges including two counts of armed robbery and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court.
The second suspect remains at large. Surveillance footage released by police shows the two individuals near the scene.

Community Support and Resilience
In response to the crime, the Boston community rallied around the Byrne family. Neighbors, local officials, and even Boston Mayor Michelle Wu showed support as the siblings reopened their stand on Friday. The event drew large crowds, with half of the proceeds donated to a local organization working to prevent gun violence.

“I never thought this many people would come. It really makes me feel happy,” Juliette said, reflecting the outpouring of kindness.
Councilor Ed Flynn and other lawmakers highlighted the incident as a call to address youth crime and gun violence in the city.
A Disturbing Trend
This case has sparked discussions about juvenile crime and the need for stronger interventions. Robbing children running a simple lemonade stand at gunpoint represents a particularly callous act that has left many residents stunned.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about the second suspect to contact Boston Police.
The bravery of David and Juliette, and the community’s response, stand as a heartening counterpoint to this disturbing crime. Our thoughts remain with the young victims and their family.
