Glasgow, Scotland – At just 12 years old, Rebecca Young from Glasgow has turned a compassionate idea into a practical invention that is already making a difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness. Her solar-powered heated blanket has earned her international recognition, including a spot on TIME magazine’s prestigious “Girls of the Year” list.

Rebecca first came up with the concept while attending an engineering club at Kelvinside Academy. Deeply affected by seeing people sleeping rough on Glasgow’s streets, especially during harsh winters, she wanted to create something that could provide real comfort and protection from the cold.

Her innovative design features solar panels that collect energy during the day and store it in a battery pack. At night, the stored energy powers heating elements in the blanket, helping users stay warm when shelter is unavailable.

The young inventor entered her idea into the UK Primary Engineer competition, which received over 70,000 entries. Rebecca’s project stood out for its practicality, empathy, and potential impact. Defense and engineering company Thales helped bring her concept to life, producing a working prototype.

Thirty-five heated blankets have already been distributed through Homeless Project Scotland, with positive feedback from those who have used them. The organization has expressed interest in obtaining more units in the future.

Rebecca’s achievement has brought her global attention. She was featured on a digital cover of TIME magazine and even transformed into a LEGO mini-figure as part of the recognition.

Despite the acclaim, Rebecca remains humble and focused on helping others. She encourages young people — especially girls interested in STEM — to pursue their ideas, join clubs, and seek mentorship.
