Family Sues After 3-Year-Old Boy Crushed to Death by Falling Park Monument in Washington

WALLA WALLA, Washington — The devastated parents of 3-year-old Kaleb Ortega have filed a lawsuit following the tragic death of their son, who was crushed by a massive monument at Rooks Park on April 1.
Kaleb was at the park with his father and sister on what began as a normal, happy day of play when the monument suddenly fell on him, causing fatal injuries.
His mother, a nurse, was working at a local hospital when her young son was rushed into the emergency room — an unimaginable scenario no parent should ever face.

In a statement, the family described the heartbreak:
“On what started as a normal, happy day filled with play, an unimaginable accident occurred that took Kaleb from us far too soon.”
The lawsuit targets those responsible for the monument’s installation and maintenance, alleging negligence that led to the preventable tragedy. A memorial marker now stands at the site where the accident occurred.
This heartbreaking case has left the local community mourning the loss of a vibrant young child whose life was cut short in an instant. The family is seeking justice and answers as they navigate life without their beloved son.
Our deepest condolences go out to Kaleb’s parents, sister, and all who loved him.
