NYPD Bodycam Captures Heroic Moment Cops Pull Distraught Woman Off Brooklyn Bridge: ‘Don’t Do It!’

Dramatic bodycam footage released by the New York Police Department shows officers from the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) successfully rescuing a woman who had climbed high onto the suspension cables of the Brooklyn Bridge, dangling precariously above the East River.
The incident occurred shortly before 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. Officers responded to 911 calls and carefully approached the woman, who was perched on a steel cable with her feet dangling over the edge. One officer is heard calmly engaging her in conversation, saying, “I just wanna talk. What’s happening today? I wanna help you, that’s why I’m up here right now.”
The officer continued to build rapport, telling her, “It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem… We have services we can get you to,” and emphasizing, “The strongest thing you can do right now is accept help.” The tense standoff lasted more than an hour as officers worked to de-escalate the situation while traffic lanes were closed.
Finally, officers moved in, with one grabbing the woman in a bear hug while pleading, “Don’t do it. Don’t do it, please… I got you. You’re okay, I promise.” She was safely brought down without injury and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Sources indicate the woman, who was not publicly identified, has a history of mental health issues.
Eastbound lanes of the bridge toward Brooklyn were reopened around 10 p.m. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch praised the officers’ “care, courage, and compassion.”
