READING, Pennsylvania — A 16-year-old Pennsylvania boy who witnesses say was trying to protect his family and break up a fight during a Fourth of July party was tragically shot and killed, according to newly released court documents.

Authorities identified the victim as Felipe Solis Rodriguez Jr., 16, of Hampden Township, Cumberland County. The teenager died after a shooting at a party in Reading on the night of July 4, the Berks County Coroner’s Office confirmed.

Police have charged Daniel Cruz Jr., 16, of Reading, with criminal homicide and related offenses in connection with the fatal shooting.

According to charging documents, the violence erupted after an argument broke out among partygoers. Witnesses told investigators that Rodriguez Jr. stepped in to help separate those involved in the altercation and defend members of his family as tensions escalated.

Investigators allege that during the confrontation, Cruz Jr. pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots. Rodriguez Jr. was struck by gunfire and later died from his injuries. Authorities say witnesses identified the suspect, and investigators gathered surveillance footage and other evidence during the investigation.

Police arrested Cruz Jr. following the shooting, and he now faces homicide and additional firearm-related charges. The case remains pending, and prosecutors have not released further details regarding a possible motive. As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Rodriguez Jr. had been preparing to begin his junior year at Cumberland Valley High School in the fall. Friends, classmates, and community members have remembered him as a kind-hearted teenager who was always willing to help others.

A memorial featuring flowers, candles, and photographs has been established in his honor, with loved ones gathering to celebrate his life and mourn a future cut tragically short.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
