19 YEARS LATER, THE MADELEINE McCANN MYSTERY REMAINS UNSOLVED — AND THE WORLD IS WATCHING AGAIN

More than 19 years after three-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal, investigators in Britain, Germany and Portugal are still working on one of the most closely followed missing-child cases in modern history. A key suspect remains under investigation, but no one has ever been charged with Madeleine’s disappearance.

The night Madeleine disappeared

Madeleine Beth McCann disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007, while her family was staying at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve region. She was three years old and would have turned 23 in May 2026.

Madeleine had been sleeping in an apartment with her younger twin siblings while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant. Why the case is receiving attention again

Portuguese authorities formally made him an arguido, or official suspect, in 2022. Major new search in Portugal

Authorities searched locations in the municipality of Lagos, including an area between Praia da Luz and a property where Brueckner had previously lived. The operation involved Portuguese police and Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office. Any evidence recovered was to be transferred to German investigators for examination. (Reuters)

Despite intense speculation around the 2025 operation, authorities have not publicly announced evidence that conclusively solves Madeleine’s disappearance.

Christian Brueckner is now out of prison

A Schleswig court authorized a four-week extension of around-the-clock observation after police challenged an earlier decision that would have ended the measure. Reports of a British prosecution require caution
