A 30-year-old mother came home after delivering her baby boy by C-section, then developed severe pain around the surgical area and struggled to breathe.
She went back to the hospital because she knew something wasn’t right.
Days later, Claudia was rushed back by ambulance with sepsis so severe that her family says the infection had already affected her kidneys and lungs.
Then her newborn baby became seriously ill too.
Now a mother who should be recovering from childbirth with her baby in her arms is fighting to recover while little Eli is hospitalized with a serious infection of his own.
This is frightening for any woman who has given birth or is preparing to.
Alma reached out to me from Laredo, Texas, hoping people on my page will surround Claudia and Eli with prayer.
Claudia gave birth to Eli by C-section on August 6th.
A couple of days after being released, her family says she began experiencing significant pain around her C-section and difficulty breathing.
She knew something didn’t feel right and returned to the hospital.
According to her family, Claudia was told she may have been overdoing it after giving birth and needed to take it easy.
But she kept getting worse.
On August 15th, Claudia became so short of breath that she called an ambulance.
Her family says doctors discovered she had developed sepsis from a severe infection that had already affected her kidneys and lungs.
She was admitted to the ICU in critical condition.
Then, while her loved ones were trying to comprehend how a 30-year-old new mother had become so desperately ill, they were hit with another frightening development.
Baby Eli was sick too.
The newborn was transferred to Driscoll Children’s Hospital after doctors discovered what the family describes as a serious infection in his chest.
In a matter of days, a mother and her newborn went from beginning their life together to fighting serious infections in separate hospitals.
The family says doctors are still trying to understand what happened and whether the two infections could somehow be connected.
There is some encouraging news.
Alma says Eli has begun improving.
Claudia remains in delicate condition as her body continues fighting to recover.
And there is one thing this family desperately wants to see again:
Claudia holding her baby boy.
If you’re a mother who experienced a serious or unexpected complication after giving birth, please share your story below. What symptoms told you something wasn’t right?
Someone reading your experience may need to hear it.
And please put Claudia and Eli’s names in your prayers today.
Pray for Claudia’s lungs and kidneys to recover, for Eli to keep getting stronger and for wisdom for every medical professional caring for them.
Most of all, pray for the day this new mom can finally hold her baby boy in her arms again.
