CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA — An 18-year-old college soccer player was found dead inside her Jeep in Pennsylvania, and investigators say her boyfriend later turned to his own mother for help allegedly concealing what had happened.

Karoline Jordyn Heintz, 18, was discovered in the rear hatch of her Jeep near the California Public Library shortly after midnight on August 20. She had been preparing to begin her freshman year at Pennsylvania Western University.

Police have charged her boyfriend, Royce Jones Moser, 18, with criminal homicide.

His mother, Rachel Moser, is accused of helping him clean the vehicle and clothing and dispose of evidence. She faces charges including hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, obstruction and abuse of a corpse.

💔 A Conversation Between a Young Couple Turned Deadly
According to Pennsylvania State Police, Heintz and Moser met Wednesday evening at the home of Moser’s father in North Strabane Township.

The couple reportedly sat inside Heintz’s Jeep and talked about their relationship and their plans as she prepared to begin college.

Investigators say the conversation eventually became heated.

Police allege that Moser went inside the house, retrieved a large kitchen knife and returned to the vehicle.

He allegedly stabbed Heintz in the chest before placing her body inside the rear hatch of her Jeep.

🚨 He Allegedly Drove to His Mother’s House
After the attack, investigators say Moser drove Heintz’s vehicle approximately 16 miles to his mother’s home in Beallsville.

According to the criminal complaint, he contacted Rachel Moser and asked for help.

Police allege that she told him to bring the vehicle into the garage.

Investigators say the mother and son then attempted to clean blood from the Jeep and clothing.

Rachel allegedly provided latex gloves and later followed her son as he drove Heintz’s vehicle back toward California Borough.

🔎 Heintz’s Family Helped Police Locate Her
While the alleged cover-up was unfolding, Heintz’s family was becoming increasingly concerned.

She had been expected to return to her university housing but failed to check in.

Her family was able to track the location of her vehicle using an Apple AirTag, according to investigators.

The location led police to the area near the California Public Library.

Officers arrived shortly after midnight and found Heintz inside the Jeep.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

🧤 Investigators Say Evidence Was Being Destroyed
According to police, Rachel Moser allegedly helped her son clean the vehicle and his clothing.

Investigators also allege that she took the knife believed to have been used in the attack and placed it in an outdoor trash container.

Police later recovered the knife while executing a search warrant.

Authorities also obtained surveillance footage that investigators say showed the mother and son wearing blue latex gloves while moving the vehicle.

👿 Son Allegedly Told His Mother About “Demons”
One of the most disturbing details revealed by investigators concerns what Moser allegedly told his mother after the attack.

Police say he claimed that a “demon” had taken over him and told him to stab Heintz.

He allegedly repeated a similar account to investigators.

Authorities have not publicly said that Moser has a diagnosed mental-health condition, and the alleged statement has not been established as a medical explanation for the attack.

😢 His Mother Later Said, “My Son Took a Life”
As Rachel Moser was being taken to jail Thursday evening, reporters questioned her outside the police station.

She initially said she was sorry.

When asked why, she reportedly responded:

“That my son took a life.”

She had earlier denied helping her son cover up the killing, but investigators have accused her of assisting him after the alleged attack.

Both mother and son remain in custody.

Heintz had recently graduated from Peters Township High School.

She was preparing to begin her first year at Pennsylvania Western University, where she was expected to play Division II women’s soccer.

The university described her death as a devastating loss and extended condolences to her family, friends and everyone affected by the tragedy.

Her first collegiate season was about to begin.

Instead, her family is now preparing to say goodbye.

💔 Her Family Wants Justice
Karoline’s parents released a statement describing her death as a parent’s worst nightmare.

They remembered her as kind, intelligent and deeply loved, while asking for justice and privacy as they mourn.

The family has asked that further questions about the investigation be directed to Pennsylvania State Police.

⚖️ Charges Are Still Allegations
Royce Moser has been charged with criminal homicide, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and obstruction.

Rachel Moser faces charges including hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, obstruction and abuse of a corpse.

Neither defendant has been convicted.

The allegations against both remain subject to the court process, and they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The Investigation Continues
Investigators are still working to reconstruct what happened between the couple’s meeting Wednesday evening and the discovery of Heintz’s body several hours later.

Evidence reportedly includes surveillance footage, vehicle-location information, physical evidence recovered during searches and statements made by the suspects.

Authorities have not publicly announced a motive beyond describing the conversation between the couple as having deteriorated before the alleged attack.

For Karoline’s family, however, the central reality is already devastating.

An 18-year-old preparing to begin her college soccer career never made it back to campus. Her boyfriend now faces a homicide charge, while his mother is accused of helping conceal what happened.
