Born With Caudal Regression Syndrome, Zion Clark Became the Fastest Man on Two Hands

Zion Clark was born on 29 September 1997 without fully developed legs. The cause was caudal regression syndrome, a rare condition that disrupts how the lower spine and lower body form in the womb. Early in life he had corrective operations so he could sit upright and to limit further problems with his back. He spent years in foster care before being adopted as a teenager.

What he built afterward was an athletic career that used only his torso and arms.

He wrestled through school and later at Kent State University, where he earned All-American recognition. He also won state titles in track. Strength work followed the same logic as the mat: generate power from the shoulders, chest and core. He has said he benches far above his body weight.

On 15 February 2021, at his former high school gym in Massillon, Ohio, he set the Guinness World Record for the fastest 20 metres walking on hands: 4.78 seconds. On 13 October 2022, at The Dogpound gym in Los Angeles, he added two more titles — highest box jump using only the hands, 0.83 metres (33 inches), and most diamond push-ups in three minutes, 248 repetitions.

He later fought as a professional MMA athlete, again relying on upper-body strength and grappling skill rather than a conventional stance. He is also an author and speaker; his public motto is “no excuses.”

Caudal regression syndrome is uncommon, and the surgeries of childhood were not optional. Clark’s records do not erase that medical history. They measure what he trained his remaining body to do: cover ground on his hands faster than anyone officially timed, jump onto a box from the floor, and keep pressing when the count passed 200.
