Eight-year-old Alayna Mances has been fighting acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for nearly a year, and now her family is desperately searching for another treatment option after chemotherapy stopped working.
Alayna was diagnosed with AML on October 1, 2025. After eight months of fighting through treatment, she finally got the moment her family had prayed for — she rang the bell on May 4.
But just 22 days later, on May 26, Alayna relapsed.
Since then, she has undergone multiple additional rounds of chemotherapy, but her mom says the treatments have not worked and are now only making her sick. Doctors are also concerned the leukemia may have spread to her skin. Biopsies have been performed, and the family is currently waiting for those results.
Her family says they were given devastating news: without another treatment option, Alayna could have only a couple of months or less to live.

One possibility is CAR T-cell immunotherapy. Her mom says she understands there is no guarantee it will work, but she refuses to stop fighting for her little girl.
The family was given options of seeking additional treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or a children’s hospital in Seattle.
Without hesitation, they chose St. Jude.
“We will not accept, ‘There’s not much more we can do,’” her mom said. “We are going to try everything possible.”
Alayna’s family describes her as a sweet, spicy and spunky little girl who deserves the opportunity to grow up and live her life.
They are now asking for help with expenses and treatments that may not be covered as they pursue every possible option for Alayna.
“I have to try what I can to save my daughter. Please help us get my baby help, get her cancer-free so she can live her life. I do not want to bury our daughter. Cancer cannot have her.”
