In 2006, Danish aid worker Anja Ringgren Lovén encountered a severely malnourished two-year-old boy on a dirt road in Nigeria.

The child, later named Hope, had reportedly been abandoned after being accused of witchcraft — a practice that has placed some vulnerable children at serious risk in parts of Nigeria.

Anja stopped to help. She gave him water, stayed with him, and arranged for him to receive urgent medical treatment.

Hope survived.

He was eventually brought into Anja’s care, where he received food, medical support, education, and a safe environment to grow up in. What began with one frightened child on a roadside became part of a much larger mission.

Anja later established the African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation (ACAEDF), supporting children who have been accused of witchcraft and helping provide them with protection, education, and opportunities for a different future.

Years later, in 2025, Hope reached another remarkable milestone: graduation.

The little boy once found alone and vulnerable was now standing proudly in a graduation cap and gown — a powerful reminder of how dramatically a child’s future can change when someone chooses to stop, help, and care.

One person’s decision to help a child that day became the beginning of a lifelong mission to help many more.
