My Daughter Banned Me From Her Wedding Because I Was a Waitress—Then the Groom’s Father Stood Up
PART 1 — THE MOTHER SHE WAS ASHAMED OF
“Mom, please don’t come to my wedding. My fiancé’s family is very wealthy, and I don’t want them knowing you’re a waitress.”
Those were the words my only daughter said to me.
I had worked double shifts for twenty years to give her everything.
I paid for her college tuition, her first car, and even part of her wedding dress.
But apparently, I wasn’t good enough to sit among her new family.
On the wedding day, I couldn’t stop myself.
I put on my best blue dress and quietly entered the church.
My daughter spotted me.
Her face turned red.
“Mom! I told you not to come!”
Before I could answer, a distinguished older man stood up from the front pew.
“Excuse me,” he said. “Is your mother’s name Helen?”
My daughter nodded nervously.
The man walked toward me.
“Helen Dawson?”
I stared at him.
He looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember why.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Thirty years ago, I was a broke college student who couldn’t afford food.”
He took my hands.
“You fed me every night for almost a year.”
Then he turned to the wedding guests.
“Everyone, this woman is the reason I finished college.”
