Santa Barbara County Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Setting Father and Dog on Fire

Killer Remains Emotionless in Court as Judge Hands Down Maximum Penalty
Lompoc, CA — Joseph Ashley Garcia, the man convicted of murdering his father by setting him and the family dog on fire, showed no emotion as he was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday in Santa Barbara County Superior Court.
Garcia, 44, was convicted in April of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of torture in the horrific 2022 killing of his 68-year-old father, Joseph Michael Garcia, inside their Lompoc home.
During the sentencing, the convicted killer sat stone-faced, barely speaking except to whisper briefly to his attorney. He displayed no reaction as victim impact statements were read or when a video of his deceased father played in the courtroom.
The brutal attack occurred in June 2022 when police responded to a domestic dispute at the family home on North D Street. Officers saw Garcia arguing with his father through a window, while the victim sat with the family terrier, Charlie, on his lap.
When officers forced their way inside, they found the father engulfed in flames. The dog was also severely burned. The victim suffered second- and third-degree burns over 35% of his body and died 10 days later from septic shock while undergoing skin graft surgery.
Before his death, the elder Garcia told police his son had tried to stab him with a knife before dousing him with accelerant and setting him ablaze. Investigators recovered a bottle half-filled with acetone, a lighter, and a large machete at the scene.
Authorities said the attack was driven by Garcia’s drug use and his delusional accusations that his father and stepmother were having an affair.
Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch described the case as one of the most disturbing his office has ever prosecuted.
Garcia will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
