The health of nine-month-old Palestinian infant Mohammed Ahed Al-Masri (also referred to as Muhammed al-Masri) has taken a serious turn. He suffers from intussusception, a condition in which one segment of the intestine telescopes into another, causing intestinal obstruction and the death of part of his intestine. This required surgery to remove the damaged section of the intestine and the right side of the colon, followed by reconnection of the remaining intestine.

One week later, Mohammed developed a leak at the site of the intestinal reconnection. This necessitated a second surgery and the creation of an ileostomy to divert the bowel. He subsequently suffered a rupture of the abdominal wall, which required a third surgical procedure.

Mohammed was also admitted to the intensive care unit twice due to elevated kidney function levels and sepsis. He is currently suffering from severe malnutrition as a result of his critical condition and repeated surgical complications. At nine months of age, he weighs only around four kilograms and is largely unable to eat or drink.

According to his mother and medical staff at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, the problems began when he was about four months old with an intestinal obstruction. Dr. Ahmed al-Farra, director of the pediatric and maternity building at the complex, stated that the infant has undergone several operations, including one performed by a visiting medical team, but recurrent complications have caused his condition to deteriorate further. He is currently in the pediatric intensive care unit, where the specialized treatment he needs cannot be provided within Gaza.

Doctors have confirmed that saving Mohammed’s life depends on his urgent transfer abroad for specialized surgical treatment and advanced medical care. Continued delays place his life at serious risk and increase the likelihood of complications that will become increasingly difficult to manage. His medical referral for evacuation was prepared some time ago, but the process has been stalled amid border closures and movement restrictions. His mother has appealed for immediate help, saying every day of delay worsens his condition.

The case highlights the severe strain on Gaza’s healthcare system, where shortages of medicines, medical supplies, and specialized equipment limit the ability to manage complex pediatric surgical cases. Many critically ill patients, including children, remain waiting for medical evacuation while their conditions continue to decline.
