Tortoise Survives 10 Years Trapped Under a Sealed Floor in Brazil Home

Itacajá, Brazil — In an astonishing tale of survival, a tortoise was discovered alive after spending nearly 10 years trapped beneath the tiled floor of a family’s outbuilding.

The remarkable discovery happened during home repairs when workers broke through the floor tiles to fix a damp issue. To everyone’s shock, they found the tortoise living in a small cavity underneath the completely sealed flooring that had been installed a decade earlier.

The family believes the tortoise — likely just a tiny juvenile at the time — was accidentally sealed under the floor during construction, possibly arriving with a truckload of gravel used as foundation material.

Despite being trapped in total darkness with almost no food or water for 10 long years, the hardy reptile survived. Experts say its incredibly slow metabolism, ability to enter a state of estivation (a form of dormancy), and feeding on small insects, termites, and condensation allowed it to endure the extreme conditions. Its shell showed some deformation from the cramped space, but the tortoise was alert and began eating soon after being rescued.

This incredible story highlights just how resilient tortoises can be. These ancient creatures are built for survival, capable of going without food or water for extraordinarily long periods.

The family was overjoyed by the unexpected “homecoming,” and the tortoise is now receiving proper care and a much more spacious environment.

From a forgotten prisoner beneath the floor to a living miracle — this tough little survivor has captured hearts around the world and reminded us all of nature’s unbelievable will to live.

A true testament to patience and resilience!
