Heroic Family Dog Fights Off Bear Charging at 6-Year-Old Boy in Connecticut: Video

CONNECTICUT — A family’s quick-thinking dog became a hero after bravely intervening to protect a 6-year-old boy from a charging black bear outside their home. Dramatic security camera footage captured the heart-stopping moment on July 4, showing the bear approaching young Colton Tazzara before the family’s husky mix, Bella, sprang into action.
In the video, the bear charges toward Colton, who was playing in the front yard. The boy stands his ground as the predator closes in. At the critical moment, Bella races forward with a “vicious bark,” nipping at the bear’s tail and rear to drive it away. The dog continued chasing the bear, which crashed into a boat before fleeing into the woods.
Colton’s father, Jeffrey Tazzara, told ABC News he heard Bella’s unusual bark and rushed outside. “A vicious bark, not like she barks and yips and howls and stuff … this was a different kind of bark,” he recalled. Thankfully, no one was injured in the encounter.
Bella’s bravery was recognized on July 17 by local politicians, who honored her for “incredible bravery.” State Sen. Stephen Harding praised the dog in a Facebook post, noting the remarkable bond between families and their pets. “Connecticut is proud to call you one very good dog!” he wrote.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of pet vigilance and wildlife awareness in suburban areas where bears are increasingly common. Officials often advise residents to secure trash, avoid leaving food outside, and supervise children and pets outdoors in bear-prone regions.
