Memphis, Tennessee — New details have emerged in the case of 20-year-old Rodderius Morton, who was fatally shot by a mother after she allegedly discovered him hiding under her 13-year-old daughter’s bed. Morton’s former teacher has described him as mentally disabled, adding another layer of tragedy to the incident.

Kendra Scott, 36, faces first-degree murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony charges in connection with the July 16 shooting at a home in the 3000 block of Travis Road. According to police, Morton was invited into the residence by the juvenile around 1 a.m. through the back door. When Scott returned home shortly after and demanded to know who was inside, the teen let her in, leading to the discovery.

Morton allegedly attempted to flee as a confrontation unfolded, moving toward the front porch where a single gunshot was heard. A neighbor reported seeing Scott outside holding a gun and saying, “I shot him, I shot him.” Morton was found with a gunshot wound to the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scott told investigators she “did what she had to do” upon finding the man under her child’s bed. Her attorney has described the situation as “every parent’s worst nightmare,” noting the intense emotions involved. Scott’s bond is set at $100,000, with her next court appearance scheduled for August 3.
