Nolan Wells Update (as of July 31, 2026): Status of “The Girl” and the Grand Jury

There is no confirmed major public statement from Katie McCormack (the young woman Nolan Wells was last seen speaking with on Horn Island) that resolves the conflicting accounts of his final hour. Claims circulating online that “the girl finally spoke” in a detailed interview or official deposition that changes the case are not supported by credible reporting.

Katie McCormack, 19, has been identified as the person Nolan was talking with near the time his friends left the island.
Her sister, Gracie McCormack, has spoken publicly on her behalf. Gracie has said Katie assumed Nolan was getting back on the boat he arrived on and that his friends would not leave him. Katie left the island later with her own group (her brother and his fiancée).
Katie herself has not given a full public interview. She posted a brief social-media response earlier, saying she was praying for Nolan’s family and friends and describing the situation as terrible. Her family has stated they have cooperated with both investigators and Nolan’s parents.
The core contradiction remains unresolved in public records: – Friends say Nolan chose to stay behind with Katie. – Katie’s side says she believed he was leaving with the group.

Grand Jury Status
Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath has confirmed that the case will be presented to a grand jury once the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office finishes its investigation.This is standard procedure in Jackson County for nearly all unnatural or suspicious deaths (not only cases where crime is suspected). Evidence, including the official autopsy and toxicology results, is being kept under seal until that process occurs. There is no public indication that the grand jury has already convened or returned a decision as of July 31.

The coroner’s office requested that the autopsy be conducted at the state medical examiner’s office because of the “condition” in which Wells’ body was found and to definitively determine whether there was any trauma or signs of foul play, Lynd said.

The Jackson County sheriff’s department has interviewed dozens of witnesses and is working with the FBI to investigate the case, Mississippi’s Sun Herald reported. CNN has reached out to the sheriff’s department for more information.

Experts told CNN the state’s autopsy – performed days before the independent examination – could help give investigators better insight into what led to the teen’s mysterious death that holiday weekend.

The state examiner should have access to witness information, retained remains and other evidence the independent examiner lacked that could help clarify cause and manner of death – though the process could take months, according to forensic pathologists who did not work on Wells’ case.
