Two years after a devastating house fire destroyed her family, little Safyre Terry still carried an unbreakable spirit.

In May 2013, a fire tore through the family’s home on Hulett Street in Schenectady, New York. The blaze claimed the lives of her father and three siblings. Safyre, then five years old, was the sole survivor. Firefighters found her shielded by her father’s body. She suffered burns over 75 percent of her body and would later undergo dozens of surgeries, losing part of an arm and a foot.

Despite the unimaginable loss and physical pain, Safyre never lost her bright, determined personality. Raised by her aunt Liz Dolder, she continued to face life with remarkable resilience.

As Christmas approached in 2015, Safyre had one simple wish: to receive enough holiday cards to fill the special tree-shaped display her aunt had set up. When her aunt shared the request online, the response was overwhelming. Cards poured in from around the world — tens of thousands, eventually reported in the hundreds of thousands to more than a million. Packages, gifts, and messages of love arrived as well, turning a quiet wish into a global outpouring of kindness.

Safyre’s story is one of survival against terrible odds and the power of community to lift a child who had already lost so much. Though her body bears the scars of that night, her spirit continues to shine — a living reminder that even after the darkest tragedy, hope and human kindness can still fill a life with light.
