From the moment Damien Wong entered the world, his parents, Anastasia and Matthew Wong, knew his path would be different. Damien was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS), a rare congenital condition in which fibrous strands from the amniotic sac wrap around a developing fetus, restricting blood flow and disrupting normal growth.

In Damien’s case, the effects were significant. He was born with vision loss, a cleft lip and palate, differences in the structure of his nose, and webbed fingers. Doctors explained that he would likely need approximately 18 surgeries over the course of his life to address these challenges and support his development.

Amniotic Band Syndrome occurs in roughly 1 in 1,200 to 15,000 live births. It is not genetic and is believed to result from early disruption of the amniotic membrane, allowing strands of tissue to entangle fetal parts. The severity varies widely depending on when and where the bands form — ranging from mild constriction rings on fingers or toes to more complex craniofacial and limb differences.

For the Wong family, the diagnosis brought an immediate need for specialized care. Since Anastasia’s pregnancy, they have traveled repeatedly to Los Angeles for expert evaluation and treatment. Each trip involves significant logistical and financial demands — medical costs, extended stays, travel, and daily living expenses while far from home.

In one recent update shared by the family, they prepared for Damien’s third major surgery: repair of his cleft palate. The procedure required another multi-week stay in Los Angeles. Anastasia and Matthew have emphasized that while the medical journey is long, their focus remains on giving Damien the best possible quality of life and access to the care he needs.

Despite the challenges, the parents have approached Damien’s story with determination rather than fear. They continue to advocate for him, coordinate complex medical schedules, and seek support to cover the ongoing costs of treatment and travel. Their goal is straightforward: to ensure Damien receives every opportunity to thrive as he grows.

Damien’s case highlights both the unpredictable nature of Amniotic Band Syndrome and the resilience required of families navigating rare congenital conditions. With specialized surgical care, many children with ABS can achieve meaningful improvements in function and appearance.
