Not Parry-Romberg: Nikki Lilly, an AVM, and a Diagnosis the Caption Got Wrong

The collage is Nikki Lilly—British creator Nicole Lilly Christou, born 22 July 2004 in Enfield. The Spanish overlay says her right face “lost volume” from Parry-Romberg syndrome, a rare progressive hemifacial atrophy. That is not her diagnosis.
At six, veins rose on the right side of her face, then swelling, nosebleeds, and bleeding from the gums and tear ducts. Doctors named a high-flow craniofacial arteriovenous malformation: arteries and veins tangled without the usual capillary bed. Blood pools, vessels expand, and they can rupture. She has had nearly 100 procedures, care at Great Ormond Street and in Denver, and she is blind in the right eye. There is no cure. The face changed because vessels grew and treatments scarred and shrank tissue—not because fat and bone were eaten by Parry-Romberg.
Parry-Romberg is a different disease: slow wasting of one side of the face, often with skin tightness and sometimes seizures. Nikki’s story, awards, YouTube channel, Butterfly AVM Charity, BAFTA, and 2026 Oscars carpet are all public under the AVM label. The photos in the meme—the child with a dark swollen eye, the teen with makeup brushes, the inset of her smiling in a yellow shirt—are the same person already documented for years.
She did not hide. She filmed hospital corridors, baking, fashion, and the days after surgery. That choice made her a reference point for facial difference. It did not rewrite the pathology. Mixing her image with Parry-Romberg spreads the wrong rare-disease name onto a child whose medical file is already on the record.
