PART 4: THE SECRET BENEATH THE ROMANO NAME

Adrian read Elena’s letter three times.

Each time, the words became harder to bear.

My husband,

If you’re reading this, something has gone wrong.

I know you believe I kept your daughter from you.

But I didn’t.

I was trying to bring her home.

Lucia was never the only child hidden by your father’s decisions.

There was another baby.

A little boy born at the same clinic.

He was registered under a different surname.

And the records connecting him to the Romano family were deliberately destroyed.

I found him.

I also found the person responsible for hiding both children.

Adrian stopped reading.

Another child?

His father had concealed two?

He looked at Vincent.

“What does this mean?”

Vincent’s face was pale.

Adrian continued.

The boy was not your son, Adrian.

He was your brother.

Your father had a second family.

When your mother discovered the truth, she tried to protect the children.

She created trusts for both of them.

Your father used those trusts to hide money, and Carlo DeLuca helped him.

But there is something you must understand.

Your mother did not abandon those children.

She fought for them.

And she left you the means to finish what she started.

Adrian lowered the letter.

A brother.

Somewhere in the world, he had a younger brother.

A man who might have spent his entire life believing he had no family.

Vincent spoke quietly.

“His name is Daniel Bell.”

“Where is he?”

“That’s the problem.”

Adrian looked up.

“Daniel disappeared six months ago.”

“Why?”

“He found the financial records before Elena did.”

The room became silent.

Then Adrian noticed the final paragraph.

The man in the photograph is Thomas Vale.

He is helping me because I trust him.

But there is one person you must never allow near Lucia.

Bianca.

Adrian folded the letter.

“Where’s Elena?”

Vincent opened a map.

“Carlo owns a private estate outside Lake Geneva. One of his vehicles left Chicago forty minutes after Elena’s call.”

“Get the police.”

Vincent stared at him.

For years, Adrian Romano had solved problems through fear.

Through money.

Through men who never asked questions.

Now he was asking for the law.

“Adrian?”

“Call the authorities. Give them everything.”

Vincent nodded.

“And Adrian?”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian looked at the man who had protected him since they were teenagers.

“Then help me make this right.”

By dawn, investigators had located the vehicle.

Elena was found at an isolated guesthouse on Carlo’s estate.

She was frightened but unharmed.

Carlo had been attempting to force her to withdraw the financial evidence and sign away control of the charitable trusts.

Bianca had helped arrange the meeting by pretending she wanted to negotiate privately.

But Elena had prepared for that possibility.

The documents had already been delivered to investigators.

Carlo’s threats could not erase them.

When Adrian entered the hospital room where Elena was being examined, she was sitting beside the window.

Her face was pale.

Her hands rested protectively over her stomach.

He stopped at the doorway.

For the first time in their marriage, he was afraid to approach her.

“Elena.”

She looked up.

Neither spoke.

Then Adrian whispered, “Are you and the baby all right?”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

Relief nearly brought him to his knees.

“I know about Lucia,” he said.

“I know.”

“And Daniel.”

Elena nodded.

Adrian swallowed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled.

“I tried.”

He remembered the white envelope.

The night he had chosen Bianca over his wife.

“I know,” he whispered.

Elena looked away.

“I spent months hoping you would notice something was wrong.”

“I should have.”

“Yes.”

There was no anger in her voice.

That made it worse.

Adrian moved closer.

“I can fix this.”

Elena shook her head.

“You can’t fix eight years with one apology.”

He stopped.

She continued.

“You can become a better father. You can find Lucia. You can help your brother. You can make sure the foundation is never used to hurt anyone again.”

“And us?”

Her silence answered him.

Adrian sat down.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, Elena reached into her bag.

She removed a small envelope.

The same white envelope he had refused to open three months earlier.

“I was going to give you this the night you told me you wanted a divorce.”

Inside was an ultrasound photograph.

Beneath it, Elena had written:

HELLO, DADDY. I HOPE YOU’LL LOVE ME AS MUCH AS MOMMY ALREADY DOES.

Adrian pressed a hand over his mouth.

He began to cry.

Not quietly.

Not gracefully.

The powerful man who had made entire rooms tremble sat beside his wife and wept over a photograph of a child he had nearly lost before meeting.

Elena watched him.

Then she said something he would remember for the rest of his life.

“Adrian, I never wanted your fortune.”

He looked at her.

“I wanted you to come home.”

Before he could answer, the hospital door opened.

Dr. Hart entered with an investigator.

“Mrs. Romano, we found Daniel Bell.”

Elena stood.

“Is he safe?”

“Yes.”

Adrian rose beside her.

“Where is my brother?”

The investigator hesitated.

“Mr. Romano, Daniel has been living under another identity.”

“What identity?”

The investigator placed a photograph on the table.

Adrian stared at the face.

Then he whispered:

“No. That’s impossible.”

Because Daniel Bell wasn’t a stranger.

He was someone Adrian had seen almost every day for the past eight years.

Someone who had sat at his table.

Someone who knew every secret inside his house.

Someone Adrian had trusted with his life.
