Tragic Stabbing Death of 5-Year-Old Khalil Ali Echoles in Pineville Sparks Outrage Over Domestic Violence

Pineville, N.C. — A 5-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in his sleep early Thursday morning, July 9, 2026, in what police describe as a horrific domestic violence incident carried out by his own father. Khalil Ali Echoles, who should have been preparing for kindergarten and dreaming of childhood joys, lost his life in the family’s apartment at the Sabal Point Apartments.

According to investigators, 31-year-old Jehaaz-Akil Khaliq Echoles allegedly kicked in the front door of his ex-girlfriend’s home just after midnight. He entered the children’s bedroom, closed the door, and attacked his sleeping son. The child’s mother, on the phone with 911 to report the break-in, realized the horrifying reality: “He’s hurting my baby.”

Officers arrived to find Khalil suffering from multiple stab wounds to his face, head, and arms. They rushed him to the hospital in a patrol car, but he could not be saved. The suspect fled the scene and was arrested a short time later at a nearby Taco Bell. He faces charges of first-degree murder and assault on a female and is being held without bond in the Mecklenburg County Jail. His next court date is July 30.

History of Domestic Violence Reports indicate Echoles had a documented history of domestic violence, including a prior conviction and pending assault cases. He was out on bond at the time of the alleged attack. Domestic violence advocates have expressed shock and called for stronger protections in such cases.

Heartbreaking images shared in remembrance show young Khalil smiling brightly, often depicted with angel wings — a symbol of his innocence taken too soon. The community mourns a little boy whose life was violently ended before it could fully bloom.

This devastating tragedy highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable children. Anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic abuse is encouraged to seek help through local resources or the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
