Mother and Daughter Share a Rare White Hair Streak: A Story of Connection and Pride

When Elma Godwin first held her newborn daughter against her chest on September 13, 2024, she noticed something she never expected. A tiny white streak of hair ran through the baby’s dark locks in almost exactly the same place as her own.

Elma, a media content producer then 33 years old and living in Dallas, Texas, was born with piebaldism, a rare genetic condition that causes patches of skin and hair to lack pigment. In her case, it produced a distinctive white streak beginning at the hairline and running through her otherwise dark hair. Growing up, she often felt she was the only person who looked this way. It was not until adulthood, around age 24, that she discovered an online community of others with the same trait and gradually learned to embrace the feature that once made her feel different.

Her older daughter, Ari, had not inherited the white streak, so Elma and her husband, Misan Ludart, did not expect their second child to have it either. Then Aninoritse Bridget-Chimereya Ludart—affectionately called Ani—arrived. “When they placed her on my chest, I was the first to see it,” Elma later recalled. “I couldn’t believe it—her hair had the exact same white streak as mine, in the exact same spot.” Nurses and doctors in the delivery room were equally amazed.

Piebaldism is an autosomal-dominant condition, meaning a parent who carries the trait has roughly a 50 percent chance of passing it to each child. It is generally harmless and primarily a cosmetic characteristic, most often appearing as a white forelock. For Elma, the unexpected inheritance created an instant, visible bond. What had once set her apart now linked her to her daughter in a powerful way. “I am no longer ‘the only one’ in my family,” she has said.

Today, Elma hopes Ani will grow up viewing the white streak with pride rather than insecurity. Having lived with the trait herself, she is determined to help her daughter own it as a gift—the same way her own parents once encouraged her. Ani will never have to wonder whether she is alone. She only has to look at her mother.

The story of mother and daughter sharing this rare genetic marker has resonated widely, reminding many that the features that once felt isolating can become sources of connection, identity, and quiet strength.
