When Vitória Vasconcelos Esteves was born in Nova Friburgo, Brazil, her family immediately noticed a large mass on the left side of her face. Doctors diagnosed her with a congenital hemangioma, a benign growth involving abnormal blood vessels. Although the condition was not cancerous, the lesion gradually became larger and significantly changed the appearance of her cheek, creating challenges that went far beyond the medical diagnosis.

Vitória was born on May 19, 2014, and her mother, Rosilda Cabral de Vasconcelos, later recalled how unexpected the diagnosis was. The family initially had little idea what the mass meant or what the future would look like. As Vitória grew older, however, she became increasingly aware that her appearance was different from that of other children. According to her mother, Vitória eventually became reluctant to look at herself in the mirror and experienced hurtful comments from other children because of the difference in her face.

For her family, the biggest challenge was not simply finding medical treatment. It was helping a young girl develop confidence while she was growing up under the attention and judgment of strangers. Her mother realized that Vitória loved photography, fashion, hairstyles and makeup, and began taking playful photographs of her. In November 2019, the family started sharing those images on Instagram through the account @vitoria_pipoquinha. What began as an effort to help Vitória feel more comfortable with herself gradually became something much bigger.

Vitória’s online presence attracted a large audience, including people living with hemangiomas and others dealing with visible differences. She began sharing makeup videos, photographs, clothing ideas and parts of her everyday life. Instead of hiding the feature that had once made her uncomfortable, she increasingly appeared in front of the camera with confidence and personality. Reports from the time said the account had attracted more than 100,000 followers.

Her journey was not without controversy. Her family received criticism from people who questioned why they were sharing Vitória’s story online, and some comments reportedly made her mother consider leaving social media. Supporters, however, encouraged the family to continue, and the account became an important source of encouragement for people who could identify with Vitória’s experience.

Behind the inspiring photographs, Vitória was also undergoing years of medical treatment. Her doctors used embolization, a minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce blood flow to the vascular lesion. According to later reports, she underwent nine embolization procedures, and in May 2024 her medical team determined that the tumor had been eradicated. The treatment nevertheless left excess skin and tissue on her face, which eventually became the focus of another stage of her medical journey.

After nearly a decade of treatment, Vitória underwent facial reconstructive surgery in December 2024. The procedure removed excess skin left behind after the treatment of the hemangioma and aimed to improve the structure and appearance of the affected area. Her recovery was subsequently documented by her family on social media, where they hoped her experience could encourage others facing similar challenges.

Medical experts generally describe hemangiomas as benign vascular tumors or vascular growths. They can occur in different parts of the body and are particularly common in the head and neck region. Their behavior varies considerably, with some requiring little intervention while others need treatment because of their size, location or potential complications. In Vitória’s case, the lesion was particularly prominent because of its location on her face, making both medical management and the psychological impact especially significant.

Even after surgery, Vitória’s story was not simply about changing her appearance. Her mother explained that the girl remained somewhat reserved around people in person, while feeling more comfortable expressing herself online. That difference highlights how deeply childhood experiences with staring, teasing and social judgment can affect confidence, even after a physical condition has been treated.

What makes Vitória’s story remarkable is the transformation that took place alongside her medical treatment. The same facial difference that once made her avoid mirrors eventually became something she openly discussed with thousands of people. Through photographs, makeup tutorials and everyday posts, she showed that confidence does not necessarily come from looking like everyone else. Sometimes it comes from learning to accept yourself while facing the things that make you different.

Today, her story represents much more than a rare medical condition. It is a story about a child who struggled with other people’s reactions, a mother who found a creative way to rebuild her daughter’s confidence, and a family that continued searching for treatment while refusing to let a diagnosis define Vitória’s identity.

Her journey also carries a simple message: a visible difference may change the way the world looks at someone, but it does not determine that person’s worth. Vitória’s smile, personality and confidence became the part of her story that people remembered most.

After years of treatment and a major reconstructive operation, the little girl who once struggled to look at herself in the mirror has become an example of resilience and self-acceptance.
