Search for three-year-old Noah Woods in Brantham ends in tragedy

The search for three-year-old Noah Woods in Brantham, Suffolk, has ended in tragedy. Police confirmed that a child’s body recovered from Decoy Pond on 16 September was formally identified as Noah the following day. His family has been informed. Officers said the death is not being treated as suspicious, though enquiries continue before a report is submitted to the coroner.

Noah disappeared on the afternoon of 15 September after becoming separated from a relative at the Merriam Close playground. CCTV captured his last confirmed sighting at 2:37 p.m., showing him in the park before he ran down an alleyway toward a nearby housing estate and the area around Decoy Pond.

The footage was central to the investigation because it established his last known movements. Police said Noah was non-verbal, partially deaf and undergoing an autism assessment, meaning he might not respond to his name — factors that made the search especially difficult.

What followed was a large community response. Specialist police teams, dog units, helicopters, HM Coastguard, fire and rescue crews, search-and-rescue volunteers and other agencies joined the operation. Around 1,300 members of the public also helped search Brantham and the surrounding area.

After an intensive search, Metropolitan Police dive-team officers recovered a child’s body from Decoy Pond on Wednesday afternoon. Identification was still pending at that stage. The next day, Suffolk Constabulary confirmed the child was Noah.

Police have stressed there is currently no indication of criminality or suspicious circumstances. The remaining investigation will establish the circumstances of Noah’s death, with the coroner ultimately determining the formal cause. Suffolk Constabulary has asked the public to respect the family’s privacy. Noah’s father, Rhys Woods, later described him as “the sweetest and most innocent little boy” and thanked those who joined the search.
